Amelie's Cafe

In Rue Lepic
a woman smiles
behind two windmills
hard to find.
Choose a table
a little déjeuner
sit silently
and watch les gens du pays.

Montmartre in its quiet glory,
so many tales to tell,
so many never told;
some sung, some painted,
the majority forgotten,
cobbled history.

Amelie smiles
because she knows
that this is how
it used to be
when all the artists
made their way
past her café
from Moulin Rouge
to see the Lapin Agile play.

Moulin Galette, Moulin Radet,
What tricks they turn
in Renoir’s garden,
Lautrec’s sweet display.

And all before the Sacré Coeur
got in the way
of looking down at Notre Dame;
our lady Amelie
never to be Esmerelda
as she smiles
in her café.
