Platonic Lot

One impulsive afternoon
my friend and I
went to an auction.
She wanted something
for her living room
and sure enough she saw
a picture that she loved
and nervous, asked me if I’d do her bidding.

We sat, just waited
for her lot, 109
and though I’d never bid before
I soon was in
the swing of it
and even gave my name
instead of hers
when my bid made the hammer fall.

She grabbed my hand,
and pressed it
to her chest
so I could feel
the beating of her heart.
I’d never felt her heart before,
now there it was
excited at my bidding hand.

In that moment
we were married
by a picture,
entirely platonic,
no kiss or fumble in the dark,
a much more
glorious spark
ignited by a simple passion.

By dark
we were divorced,
she back home with her lover,
picture on the wall,
me still glowing
with her pulse
of perfect love,
without the usual messy fall.
